Primary sections: Most private schools in Karnataka to reopen only in November

BENGALURU/MYSURU: Although schools have been allowed to reopen for classes 1 to 5 from Monday, several private schools in Mysuru city and across the state say they will reopen only in the first or second week of November.

The government has allowed only half-day classes till the end of the month, and full-day classes from November 2. However, while private schools are dithering, staterun schools plan to welcome students from Monday. “We are geared up to receive students from Monday,” said Ramachandra Raje Urs, deputy director of public instruction, Mysuru.

Some private schools plan to open as late as November 15 for various reasons. “Many schools plan to start on-campus classes from November 15 to ensure there is continuity as Diwali falls in between,” said R Manjunath Srivatsa, joint secretary and legal cell head, CBSE, ICSE & State Board Private School Managements Association (CISPMAM). “Schools are now conducting midterm examinations. So, most want to delay reopening for primary sections.”
Srivatsa said on-campus classes for students in grades 6 upwards are being successfully held. “Schools are strictly following SoPs. So, there is no cause for worry,” he said.

D Shashikumar, general secretary, Associated Management of Primary and Secondary Schools said most private schools that follow the state syllabus will resume physical classes from Monday. “But a section of CBSE and ICSE-affiliated schools are delaying resumption as many parents are anxious about sending their children to school,” he said.

Savita Kulkarni, a parent of a school going child from Mysuru city, admitted she was apprehensive. “We are reading about a new surge in cases in the UK and China, etc. Most parents today have only one child so no one wants to take a chance.”

Meanwhile, BC Nagesh, primary and secondary education minister, said he will discuss the issue with officials and stakeholders.
